Ford: On a Mission to Conserve World's Most Precious Resource

Rhodium might be the most precious metal in the world and Alexandrite might be the most coveted gem...The most precious resource, however, is one which most of us in America tend to take for granted. That is water.

Clean water isn't just something we drink and bathe in. Ford uses approximately 40,000 gallons of water to manufacture just one car. As the company looks to go green in so many other ways (i.e., employing electric yard tractors and generating electricity from large solar panel arrays), the American automaker is now looking at how they can conserve water. They've even gone so far as to set a pretty lofty goal. Specifically, Ford aims to reduce the number of gallons they currently use to make each car by 30 percent.

How soon do they plan to achieve this feat?

In just three years. That works out to be a 10-percent annual reduction now through 2015.

Ford's plan of attack is quite straightforward. They plan to replace the current practice of lubricating equipment with water, with a method coined "dry-machining". By misting equipment with atomized oil, dry-machining is forecasted to cut water usage by up to 280,000 per year. In addition, Ford is developing advanced filtration systems, which will allow them to reuse water.

We don't know about you, but we at Montgomery Motors , located at 214 South Main Street, Troy, NC, 27371, think Ford deserves a loud round of applause for these revolutionary initiatives. We also find their work inspiring for us all to conserve water on an individual basis. Whether it's turning off the water while you're brushing your teeth or taking a shorter shower.
